Dr. Kevin C. Mudavadi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Georgia State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences from The Media School at Indiana University-Bloomington. Kevin specializes in strategic communication, focusing on the development, circulation, and impact of messages in news and digital media environments. He examines how strategic messages are shaped within organizational and institutional contexts, especially during political shifts, technological disruptions, and information disorder. Substantively, his work addresses misinformation, artificial intelligence, online harassment, and media trust, with an emphasis on sub-Saharan regions. Conceptually, he adopts a meso-level perspective that bridges message-level processes and broader communication effects, supporting a coherent, cumulative, and policy-relevant research agenda. Recently, he received an $11,000 grant from the Eastern Africa Editors Society (EAES) to investigate the use of AI in East African newsrooms (in Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya).
Kevin’s research has been published in leading journals, including Digital Journalism, Journalism, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Mobile Media & Communication, International Journal of Press/Politics, International Journal of Communication, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, African Journalism Studies, Journal of African Media Studies, and African Multidisciplinary Journal of Research. Additionally, he has contributed book chapters to, among others, Election Observation at a Crossroads and the Routledge Companion to Digital Journalism Studies (2nd ed.).
