Splicing optical fibre

Splicing optical fibre

Optical fiber splicing involves joining two fibres together, often by fusion splicing. The cleaved to have clean, terminated cross-sections, and then these end faces are heated and mechanically pushed together. If done correctly, this can form a low-loss, mechanically strong join. Commonly an electric arc is used as the heat source, but I also use CO2 lasers for a cleaner splice.
