Maximizing the Benefits of the Framework and Its Resources
Postsecondary Advising plays a critical role in ensuring that students are prepared to make informed decisions about college and career opportunities. To support districts and schools in their efforts to provide access to college and career advising for Kentucky students, the Kentucky Council for Postsecondary Education (CPE) has developed the Kentucky Postsecondary Advising Framework (KPAF).
The framework was developed with extensive input from practitioners to provide guidance to students, families, and other practitioners on the types of experiences and information a student should have in order to make the most informed decisions about college and career planning, beginning in 6th grade and continuing through 12th grade. The advising framework is intended to support statewide alignment of advising practices and is organized around four core elements: (1) Career Exploration, (2) Postsecondary Opportunities, (3) Financial Aid and Literacy, and (4) Essential Skills.
There are two versions of the KPAF. The essentials version is designed to focus on one overall grade-level outcome for each core element. The comprehensive version is much more robust and provides multiple grade-level postsecondary advising milestones and activities for each of the four core elements. Both versions are aligned to support students in grades 6-12.
