Why boron?
Why boron?
Elemental boron holds a unique place in chemistry; its application range from superhard materials and semiconductors to biological compounds. Boron is the lowest Z-element to form an extended covalent bond but not through the conventional covalent bonding as in C-C. Boron trivalent outer shell formed highly delocalized bonds, wherein electron pairs are shared among three (or more) atoms. As a result, boron exhibits 16 reported allotropes and fascinating properties such as extremely high tensile modulus, extremely hard (boron carbide), high temperature superconductivity (magnesium diboride), high mechanical and thermal stability and metallic conductivity.
