Exhibit 3

Poster Design for a Plant Swap

Design:

Background: For this exhibit, I used the assignment regarding using a layout you liked and creating guides from it. For this design, I wanted to create a light-hearted flyer that advertised a plant swap of some kind. I also wanted it to be something fun where a viewer could perhaps cut off the bottom of the flyer and hang it up somewhere.

Contrast: To display contrast, I really wanted the "SUCC" in succulent to stand out. I decided to use a western display font, that is incredibly stylized, to stand out from the simplicity of the sans-serif, Montserrat.

Alignment: This is one time where I decided to use different alignments throughout, which can be a no-no. There is a right alignment in the top left square and a left-alignment in the bottom right rectangle. This is because I wanted there to be a flow between the boxes, and it felt right to have these be opposing alignments. For the details, I would center align them across the bottom.

Proximity: On the bottom of the poster, there will be details about the event. These are in proximity to each other to signify that they are related.

Repetition: I repeated the imagery of the succulent, and posterized each to try to make them feel like the same texture. I also repeated the western style font along with Montserrat, just to stay cohesive. The pink, red, and green, are also repeated throughout this design.

Color: This is my attempt to challenge the idea of red + green = Christmas! I decided to focus on red and green, as complementary colors, but then added in the hue of pink, to make it more of a pop-art feel than a Christmas feel. I really love using red and pink together, it just feels right!

Font: I used Montserrat in bold for the majority of this design. I contrasted this using the font Discourse Narrow Heavy. The western font is also upped in size to make it stand out a bit more. For the bottom details, I repeated the use of Montserrat but used a different weight, to differentiate it from the rest of the design.

PHOTOSHOP:

I found an example of a poster I liked on Pinterest. It consisted of this four-square design with a bottom banner, so I imported it and created guides. From there, I imported the succulent images and replaced the rectangles with pink rectangles. I cropped everything to fit.

  • Used Horizontal Text and changed various setting

  • Posterized my images to a degree of 8

  • To the text I added a layer style of drop shadow, to make it stand out a bit as well.
