The first site that I visited for CEL was VisAbility which provides blind and vision rehabilitation services. Here I contributed to the Community Transition Program. At this site I learned how to plan and lead group activities which helped me grow in my confidence of working with clients and learn the value of OT in the blind population.
The CEL site I am currently visiting is the St. Anthony's School Programs Transition Apartment. This site involves working with individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in post-secondary education at Duquesne University. At the transition apartment, I work with the students on learning important everyday life skills to promote their independence.
For Fieldwork I, I visited UPMC White Oak Outpatient Rehabilitation Institute. At this site, I got to engage with clients with varying impairments in the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Through this experience, I gained new clinical knowledge that will support me for when I enter the field as a practicing OT.
My Fieldwork III placement was at UPMC East in inpatient rehab. This site helped me learn about the inpatient rehabilitation setting and the role of occupational therapy within an interdisciplinary team. Through shadowing occupational therapists and interacting with patients across a variety of diagnoses, I gained a better understanding of evaluation and treatment processes, clinical reasoning, and client-centered care in the inpatient setting.
My Fieldwork IV placement will take place at the VA Medical Center in Pittsburgh, where I will be working in an inpatient acute care setting. This experience will provide me with the opportunity to serve Veterans who have served our country, allowing me to give back while further developing my clinical skills in an inpatient rehabilitation setting.
My Fieldwork V placement will take place at The Children’s Institute in Bridgeville, an outpatient pediatric setting. This experience will provide me with hands-on opportunities to work with children while expanding my knowledge and clinical skills in pediatric occupational therapy.
