This program utilizes strategy games from the Mathematics Pentathlon. These are "problem-solving games which integrate logical/scientific, computational and spatial/geometric reasoning and focus on several strands of the elementary mathematics curriculum."
The Mathematics Pentathlon program is organized into three divisions, each consisting of five games. Division I includes grades K/1st; Division II grades 2nd/3rd; and Division III grades 4th/5th. This grouping allows students adequate time to study the underlying structure of each game and to mature in the strategic thinking skills required. In the spring, students will participate in a tournament against other schools.
In order to properly learn the games and to be able to participate in class, it is very important that students attend each week. All games are played in groups. Therefore, a student's absence affect the learning of others in his/her class. Class sizes are limited to 20 and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Please resister your child(ren) only if they will commit to attending the entire session! There is a $15.00 per child registration fee, which must be paid at the time of registration. A Math Club t-shirt will be provided. Please make checks payable to Keith Elementary PTA.
