The painting based on a boat and dock on Lake Harriet and the beautiful underwater boulders in Door County near Kelly and Tim’s house. The ideas in my head at the start of the painting were discussions of Jung with Eric, playing with the notion of viking funerals, continued experimentation with oil painting and metallic leaf, and my realization of the connection with my work to some aspects of Japanese influence on the visual arts in the Nordic countries in the 19th century (I found an exhibit catalog for the exhibition “Japanomania in the Nordic countries, 1875-1918” at the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts this summer).
Dedicated to and influenced by the work of Sister Mary Charles Icon paintings, my first artist-teacher and my experience with painting watercolors in Duluth under the tutoring of Cheng Khee Chee.
