Alexandria City Public Schools is proposing to split the elementary school community, sending students to different middle schools starting in 2026. These changes would disrupt friendships, separate long-standing classroom communities, and place students into already overcrowded schools — all based on a future school conversion that hasn’t been approved, funded, or built.
We believe this plan is rushed, speculative, and unfair to students — especially those still recovering from the social and emotional impacts of the pandemic. It doesn’t reflect the inclusive, student-first values our community deserves.
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is undergoing a citywide school redistricting process to determine new boundaries for elementary and middle schools. The goal is to adjust for enrollment growth, program changes, and the planned conversion of some schools.
All current middle school redistricting proposals call for splitting the ACPS Elementary school community and reassigning many students to different middle schools.
ACPS plans to finalize and vote on its redistricting recommendations this spring:
May 29, 2025 – Final redistricting plan will be presented to the School Board
June 12, 2025 – School Board scheduled to vote on the plan
Fall 2026 – New school boundaries go into effect
