Summer time for most people is a time of fun under the warm summer sun, especially with our furry friends. We all want whats best for our pets and for them to be safe when having fun, but there are some things many people do not consider or know the answer to.
A general rule of thumb is to avoid leaving your pets in the car during the summer if at all avoidable, but during the times in which it cannot be avoided, there are some things you can do. Leaving on the air-conditioning, cracking open the windows and leaving your pet with water are all important measures to take when leaving your pet alone, although even with these measures it is still risky to leave your pet alone.
Most of us wear shoes while taking our pets for a walk, and often don't even think of just how hot pavement can get. Pavement is often 30 degrees warmer than the outside air and can cause extreme damage to animal's feet if exposed to it for too long. Many people do not have the time or tools to measure the temperature of pavement, so a simple trick is to place your hand palm down onto the pavement for about ten seconds, if it is too hot for you, it is definitely too hot for them.
One of the best ways to cool down during the summer heat is of course, water. Most Pets enjoy some version of water play; let it be swimming in pools or lakes, playing with sprinklers or simply being soaked by a hose, but it is important to take the proper measures to keep them safe. Pets should wear life jackets in water that is deep enough that can not touch the bottom, regardless of if they can swim or not. Even pets who are strong swimmer can still end up in situations where a life jacket can save their life. Ear plugs can benefit pets prone to ear infections by keeping out water that could cause an infection. Also, before allowing your pet in any body of water make sure to check the color of the water and check for algae blooms. Algae can be harmful not only for your pets, but for you as well. The color of the water can tell you the likeliness of bacteria or an infestation, but in general avoiding still water is always best.
One of the most important things to watch out for when it comes to pets in the summer is heat stroke. Pets are very susceptible to heat stroke and owners should be aware of the signs and how best to avoid this. Always, always make sure your pet has access to water, this is the quickest way for them to regulate their temperature. It is also important to make sure your pet has access to shade as well. Avoiding long walks, or ending walks when your furry friend begins to pant is also a good idea.
