In 2018, Green Hubbardston was founded to bring back the annual tradition of cleaning up Hubbardston's roadsides on Earth Day. It was a grassroots effort—quickly organized, promoted on social media and advertised with handmade signs. Despite this humble beginning and uncertain outlook, Hubbardston residents collected 1.89 tons of trash during the event!
Green Hubbardston captured the attention of Keep Massachusetts Beautiful. We partnered with them and changed our name to Keep Hubbardston Beautiful. This partnership enables us to reach a wider audience and to be part of a greater effort to clean up the whole state. The 2019 Keep Hubbardston Beautiful Townwide Cleanup was part of the Great Massachusetts Cleanup.
During the 2019 Townwide Cleanup we collected almost one ton of trash, despite the rainy, miserable weather! In addition, the Hubbardston Girl Scouts had a successful bottle and can drive and Scouts BSA Troop 22 did well with their electronics/appliance recycling fundraiser. Both Scout groups are using the money they earned to fund their ongoing adventures. All told, we kept a lot of garbage out of landfills!
We had plans in place to host the event in 2020, but we ultimately had to cancel due to the pandemic.
In 2021 the Townwide Cleanup had to be postponed due to a freak snowstorm the day before that blanketed the town with about 5" of snow. You can't collect what you can't see! Our rescheduled event held on May 1 was our most successful ever, with 2.1 tons of trash collected!
