Due to a change in our production planning, the cut with Danji running (#046) was taken out from the animatic (video storyboard). So unfortunately, the cut will no longer be included in the actual animation footage of the episode when it airs. We apologize for this sudden change. We now offer a new cut with Megumi (Cut #255) for you to try out instead. Just like the previous Cut #046, this cut will be the most challenging to animate among the three options. We hope you take on this new challenge to get a taste of how character movements are done in anime!
Don't worry. If you've already started working on Cut #046 with Danji running, keep working at it to finish and submit by the deadline. Anyone who submits with a valid US address will receive the same Grand Prize (Vanguard poster with staff autographs) for trying out and finishing Cut #046. You can try animating Cut #255 as well to see if it will make it to the actual broadcasting, of course.
This is a recording from the Kinema Citrus panel at Anime Central 2023 held in Chicago on May 20. Nagasaku-sensei talked about techniques used in animating a cut like #255 (Megumi) by showcasing a similar cut.
Hope this helps our Challengers!

What is a Cut?
In anime production terminology, a cut is referred to as a single shot of the camera. A new start-out animator will receive a cut assignment with instructions given by an animation director such as Nagasaku-sensei to complete before a deadline. A cut assignment can be a simple as a single keyframe of a still body posture with mouth only movement, or as complicated as full hair and body movements in a cut.
Tomokatsu Nagasaku started his animator career at Walt Disney Animation Japan in 1998. Ever since he became freelance in 2004, he worked as a key animator, animation director and chief animation director on numerous titles including: the Show by Rock!! franchise, Eureka Seven AO, Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution movie, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, etc. His first character design work was for Slap Up Party: Arad Senki/Dungeon Fighter Online TV series. He currently works at Kinema Citrus as the character designer and the chief animation director for Cardfight!! Vanguard will+Dress.
The Art Challenge is open to anyone.
A Thank You autographed illustration postcard drawn by Nagasaku-sensei will be mailed to all participants with a valid US shipping address. (One card per challenger per cut, you may receive up to 3 cards if you want to challenge all three cuts.)
The goal is to provide a fun way to learn what it takes to be an animator.
Nagasaku-sensei will select 3 winners from the three Cuts. The drawings will be used in Cardfight!! Vanguard will+Dress Season 3 and each winner will receive a Vanguard poster with the main staff autographs.
The winners will be contacted by Thursday June 15th, 2023, followed by official announcement in summer on this website. (https://sites.google.com/view/kcartchallenge2023)
