Q: Can I participate even if I don't live in the US?
A: Yes, you can participate from outside of the USA. However, please note that you will not receive the participation prize if you don't have a US address. You will also not be selected as a winner either. We thank you for your understanding that this is an event held in collaboration with Anime Central 2023, a US-based convention.
Q: What should the dpi/resolution be at?
A: Please use the resolution already set for the clip and psd files. If you are scanning genga printouts, it should be at 150 dpi.
Q: Is it OK to make multiple submissions for the cuts? For instance, if I had more than one idea to execute the same cut?
A: Yes, you can make multiple submissions of a same cut. However, please indicate they are different versions so that we will not assume that you want to cancel the earlier submissions. Perhaps the best way would be to compress all the versions in one zip file and submit only once to avoid any confusion.
Q: Can I submit one cut early or do I have to submit them all together?
A: Yes, you can submit different cuts at different times. However, it will be easier on our end to see that it's the same person who is submitting different cuts, if you submit them all together.
Q: Do I just draw line art or line art + full color for the animation? Do I provide the key frames (lineart) or fully animate the scenes including the inbetweening?
A: As the READ ME FIRST.txt suggests (e.g., "Draw a total of 3 key frames") you are to draw line art. Please look up what key frames or "genga" consists of in Japanese anime, if you are not sure what that means. We also have on our website what a key frame (genga) looks like for your reference. It might be a bit hard to see, so we'll post a larger image below for your reference. There is no need for you to be doing the inbetweening for this challenge.
Q: At what level do you consider the genga work to be "complete"?
A: What is asked for at the genga stage:
Line art is complete and filling the screen frame (drawn to the outside of the dotted line)
Shadow parts are filled in with colors
The character is drawn in the same way as specified on the character design setups
So make sure you have all of the above. You can also study the sample image above (Yu-yu holding a card) to see how all 3 points are covered.
