There are many advantages in visiting Dubai. It is a perfect stop over if you are traveling across the globe, it provides a vast array of choices and it has everything you could ever dream of shopping for under the great canopy of The Mall of the Emirates.
It also provides visitors with a glimpse into the marvels of modern engineering and the ability of man to achieve greatness while at the same time exposing the sheer power and beauty of nature.
Much has been made of the commercial aspects of Dubai, the amazing yearly sales in July, the wonderful gold and antiquities and the high-end fashion but there is so much more to this cultured oasis.
I traveled here with two teenaged girls who discovered some of the less obvious and truly special experiences of one of the world’s most exciting and enchanting destinations.
On a vast desert highway…
The mystique of the Dubai desert entices everyone to experience the never-ending sandscape of golden dunes. Changing with the light they provide a magnificent backdrop to many activities, yet alone and in silence the desert itself is a force of great power that lends perspective to the marvel of the planet.
Fun, rather than philosophy, is the name of the game for many of Dubai’s desert safari outings and a regular convoy of four-wheel drive vehicles make the relatively short journey along the Abu Dhabi Highway to take visitors dune driving, sand skiing and camel riding. Dune driving is hair-raising fun, ultimately safe. Your heart leaps in your throat as you skid and slide over dunes in a roller coaster ride that leaves you breathless but eager for more. Sand skiing is for speed freaks and those who are unafraid of heights and much suited to the reckless temperament of teenagers who love to feel thrills and happily perfect for the on-looking parent who can be assured of the safety of the sport and while camel riding is far more sedate it is a joy to ride atop these wonderfully docile creatures who have been caravanning tribes across sands for centuries.
Most adventure tours end with a gathering in a traditional style compound, and although it is “touristic” the generous servings of Arabian food, the belly dancing shows and the entertainment are far from cheesy and leave everyone with a great sense of participation and enjoyment, just ready for the moonlit drive back to the city along the dark desert highway.
Sailing away..
The gorgeous blue waters of the Arabian Gulf provide a playground for all ages. For our teenagers the appeal of the water parks and beach games were passed over in preference for ‘real’ action above the waves. Parasailing and wakeboarding activities are organized through the Westin Mina Seyahi who’s enthusiastic team of expert staff guide participants into having the best experience possible. For those less keen on the high speed chase factor the Bristol Charter Company in Dubai Marina arrange tranquil outings on the ocean at sunset in traditional Dhow’s with a candle lit dinner that will bring peace and happiness at the end of an exciting day.
For keen sailors Le Meridian Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina offer the ultimate sailing challenge with “The America’s Cup Experience”. Tailored for groups of twelve and requiring no previous knowledge the day on the waves comes with complete safety training and a champagne celebration.
Brilliant Birdlife
Located in the Dubai Creek area the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary can be arrived at after a tour of the ancient Bastakiya, the old city of Dubai with its fairy tale alleys and exquisite architecture that conjures up the adventures of Aladdin. Nature trails wind through lush mangroves and lagoons leading to discreet bird hides equipped with telescopes and binoculars. Here the birdlife of the creek, mangroves and salt water areas can be quietly observed, amongst them the Greater Flamingo which seen in its natural habitat is spectacular especially when they take flight. Among other species are the Broad Billed Sandpiper and the Black Winged Stilt who wade through the water in a constant search for insects and crustaceans that they pick from the sand or the water with their long pointed beaks.
The Art of Life
In Dubai Old City is XVA Gallery. This innovative art space is a great place to view the contemporary art culture of the region. Located in a restored traditional home, housing the occasional artist, XVA holds regular exhibitions that celebrate the art of the region. XVA is surprising and moving, it provides a very valuable insight into the artistic expression of the region and through visiting it you can feel the richness of contemporary Arabian culture. It is a stimulating place, especially for youngsters who are beginning to connect artistic expression with emotion.
Moonlit moments
The Al Qazr resort beside the breathtaking Burj Al Arab Hotel comes alive in the moonlight as gondoliers ferry passengers between souks, undercover bazaars to waterside eateries including Magnolia Restaurant that serves an international menu of vegetarian and raw foods that will surprise you with their robust goodness.
Dubai is exciting, nothing gets in the way of a great time, it is easy to travel in taxis and hotel shuttles and you won’t waste a moment of your precious holiday time in traffic jams, queues or getting lost..of course unless you wish too..
