For the past seven years, I have spent my summers working at day camps for children and teens with exceptionalities. I allocated several hours to creating program plans for the participants where physical literacy and creativity were the main goals. Each week we would choose a different physical literacy skill and develop games and activities to foster this particular skill. Along with physical literacy goals, each week entailed a different theme that we then planned various crafts and learning activities for the participants. Through my experience at camps, I have acquired skills in adapting program plans for different goals, themes, and abilities, where every participant can feel included and accommodated.
I spent two years working as a Gymnastics coach for 3-5-year-olds and coaching the class for students with exceptionalities. I was required to develop lesson plans for each category, have adaptations for students, and help students reach their goals in each level.
I have spent six years working at after-school programs for children and teens with exceptionalities. Through this experience, I have learned how to program plan, make decisions that will best assist participants, and help participants build healthy and meaningful relationships. A lot of the work I have done in these after-school programs focuses on inclusivity and giving our clients opportunities to learn about self-regulation, communication, and relationship building.
I have done a considerate amount of work as a nanny and respite worker for over six years. I have worked with individuals of all ages and have learned a significant deal about individual differences in learning and communicating, self-regulation and behaviour-management, and how unique each family dynamic is. These opportunities have allowed me to build skills in communications with families and scaffolding activities for children.
I have been active in performing arts from the age of 3. My parents were always very into music and dance, and they shared that with me. I have danced from a very young age, started playing clarinet in Grade 6, and singing lessons since Grade 7. I was also very active in the musical theatre community in Calgary. In my music classes in university, I was reconnected with my musical side and have developed a love for playing the ukulele. I believe music, dance, and any form of art are incredibly beneficial for children to grow, strengthen, and foster creativity.
