Hannibal B. Johnson, author of "Black Wall Street 100: An American City Grapples with its Historical Racial Trauma," will examine what happened in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921 when hate and discrimination in the United States erupted and resulted in the destruction of a Black-owned downtown area. This program will explore how the Tulsa event continues to impact our nation, how it parallels Black history in Oregon, and how events of the past shaped the present.
Come watch our panel of local experts as they discuss anti-racism, minority representation, and how to combat systemic injustice in Consider This for December 2020.
Kristina Lefever, President of Pollinator Project Rogue Valley, addresses the essentials of growing pollinator habitats. Who are our pollinators, and why are they important? What challenges are they facing, and what can we do to reverse their population declines? Kristina's presentation answers these questions in the hopes that others will ‘bee’ inspired to become pollinator champions, and begin looking at landscapes with this question in mind: “Would a bee like to live here?”
Libraries and librarians play a big role in promoting the freedom to read. For Banned Books Week JCLS librarians took on the big questions of book censorship in a virtual panel discussion covering topics from what it means to ban a book to the types of books that get banned.
Panelists include Adult Services Coordinator Carrie Turney Ross, Bear Creek Area Manager/Ashland Branch Manager Kristin Anderson, and Teen Services Librarian Andrea Leone.
If you have ever had bad luck growing plants, then you’re in luck! Pick up a kit of fusion beads to create your own 3D cactus, that will not die! If you'd like, please feel free to complete your cactus at the library itself!
These beads need to be ironed to fully fuse together. If you don't have access to an iron, please feel free to bring the completed pieces to the Teen Library (from June 4th-11th) and we'll be happy to handle that part for you!
Kits are available while supplies last.
