The recent earthquakes in Myanmar, ranging from magnitude 4.5 to 7.7, highlight Dhakaโs seismic risks. Experts warn that Bangladesh, positioned at the intersection of the Indian, Eurasian, and Burmese plates, is one of the most tectonically active regions in the world. The Indo-Burma subduction zone, where energy has been accumulating for over a century, could experience a massive earthquake, possibly up to magnitude 9.
Historically, Bangladesh has witnessed devastating earthquakes, such as the earthquake (8.5 magnitude) at Chittagong in 1762 and the Great Indian earthquake (8.7 magnitude) in 1897. If a similar event occurs today, the infrastructures in the densely populated city of Dhaka that weren't constructed by following the building code and corresponding safety guidelines could lead to catastrophic failures.

To mitigate risks, Bangladesh must enforce strict building codes, implement earthquake-resistant infrastructure, and enhance emergency preparedness. Public awareness campaigns and disaster response training should be prioritized. Authorities must act now to prevent a humanitarian disaster.
