My passion for teaching biology began during my undergraduate years at the University of Colombo, where inspiring professors sparked my love for both science and education. Since then, teaching has become one of the most rewarding parts of my academic journey. I strive to create inclusive and engaging learning environments that foster curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Teaching, to me, shares a profound resemblance with gardening. Both require nurturing growth, fostering potential, and creating an environment where flourishing is possible. Just as a gardener carefully tends to each plant’s unique needs, I believe that effective teaching embraces the diverse learning styles and backgrounds of every student. By providing personalized support and tailored instruction, I aim to help each student unlock their full potential and grow into confident, capable learners. Read more ...
I aspire to cultivate in my students a deep appreciation for the rich diversity that surrounds us—not only as something to admire, but as a window into the complex ecological and evolutionary processes shaping our world. Learning, in my view, is a continuous journey that extends far beyond grades or assignments. Through my experiences as a teaching assistant in a variety of courses, I have come to understand that every activity and interaction in the classroom offers valuable opportunities to develop skills essential for lifelong success.
My teaching approach is adaptive and student-centered. At the start of each semester, I assess the needs and prior knowledge of my students to tailor my instruction accordingly. By creating a supportive and dynamic learning environment, I encourage engagement, critical thinking, and collaboration, empowering students to take ownership of their education.
Reflection is central to my growth as an educator. I continually seek feedback from students and colleagues, and I use these insights to refine my teaching strategies. This reflective practice ensures that I remain responsive to the evolving needs of my students and committed to continuous improvement.
Teaching brings me both joy and purpose. Beyond imparting academic knowledge, it is an opportunity to nurture personal growth, resilience, and confidence in my students. I strive to create safe, transparent classrooms where we can learn from mistakes together and foster a shared commitment to growth. Ultimately, my goal is for students to leave not only with deeper understanding but also with the confidence and leadership skills to effect positive change in their communities and beyond.

I listen to student feedback, as it plays a vital role in shaping me into a more effective educator and facilitator. While I guide students through the learning process, I’m also learning from them—about teaching, communication, and becoming a better version of myself. Below are a few comments shared through end-of-semester student evaluations that continue to inspire and inform my approach to teaching. See more ...
“Kavy made participation feel very casual, and I wasn’t anxious to raise my hand or ask questions. The overall vibe was light and friendly, which made lab feel a lot less high-stakes.”
— Spring 2025, Evolution student
“Kavy was always prepared for lab and used slides to explain key concepts and ideas that directly supported our lab experiments each day.”
— Spring 2025, Evolution student
“Kavy kept in constant communication before and after labs, which helped us prepare and eased the stress of long lab sessions. She also brought a positive attitude that made even the longer labs easier to sit through.”
— Fall 2024, Evolution student
“Walking through the lab manual and explaining what the commands meant helped me learn how to write code and understand why we were doing each step.”
— Spring 2023, Foundations of Biology student
“Kavy gave honest and constructive feedback, helped me through challenges in my mini research project, and always went the extra mile to ensure we understood the course content and more. She was available for advice at all times.”
— 2020, Principles of Ecology student (Held Online)
I became a Teaching Assistant for the first time right after completing my bachelor's degree—just as the pandemic hit and the entire country went into lockdown. In Sri Lanka, online teaching was not yet widely practiced, and many students, including myself, faced challenges with internet access, limited computer literacy, and even the lack of personal laptops. See more ...
Despite these barriers, I was committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. I prepared accessible reading materials, recorded additional lectures for students to review at their own pace, and consistently checked in on their progress with mini research projects. I also offered extra support to those who needed help navigating online platforms or understanding core concepts. While these steps may seem default today, at the time, they were new and unfamiliar—not just to students, but to instructors and TAs alike.
One major loss for students during the pandemic was the absence of hands-on field experience. To address this, our teaching team created a video series simulating fieldwork at the Bundala National Park, the default National Park field site. In this series, I co-presented an educational segment explaining how eutrophication has impacted its ecosystems. I also introduced students to research methods, with recorded segments on record keeping and basic statistical techniques—practical skills they would typically gain in the field.
This experience taught me the importance of flexibility, compassion, and innovation in teaching, especially during times of uncertainty. It also reinforced my belief that even in the most challenging circumstances, learning can remain meaningful, accessible, and deeply human.
Here’s what students shared during that challenging but transformative semester:
"This was a difficult time for all of us, with everything happening online. It was a period when teacher–student relationships often grew distant—but Kavy never let that happen."
— 2020, Principles of Ecology student (Held Online)
"Kavy gave prompt, detailed, and personalized feedback on every assignment and report, which was incredibly helpful in deepening our understanding of the course content. She also held extra sessions and meetings to support us with our research and assignments. The time she spent individually discussing our progress and challenges made a real difference."
— 2020, Principles of Ecology student (Held Online)
"Kavy took the time to learn about each of us individually, gave us opportunities to solve our problems, explained concepts clearly, and consistently encouraged us."
— 2020, Principles of Ecology student (Held Online)
"Kavy kept us updated, carefully reviewed our work, and supported our studies by providing supplementary materials and technical knowledge throughout the course."
— 2020, Principles of Ecology student (Held Online)
