レア度：いつでも見られる
形態：最大7㎝に達する。和名の通り、ひれ状に発達した突起を3方向にそなえ、貝殻を上からみると3枚のプロペラのような形になっている。ひれとひれの間の角度は決まっており、70°→180°→110°→70°…と連続的に形成される。属名は「ツノのある口」を意味しており、開口部の脇から1本の牙状突起が手前側に伸びていることも本種の大きな特徴である。
生息域：日本海と北日本の太平洋岸に広く分布し、潮下帯の岩礁に生息する。葛登支では沖合の砂礫底にみられる。
その他：殻口の牙状突起は、捕食の際に餌の貝殻に押し当てて使い、自身と餌の貝殻同士を離すことで体の可動範囲を広げ、穿孔しやすくしていると考えられている (千葉 1960)。本科には直接この突起を攻撃に使う種もいるが (e.g. Perry 1985)、同属のコノハヒレガイ C. foliatumも攻撃には使っていない (Kent 1981)。ところで、コノハヒレガイでは3方向のひれ状突起の役割を実験的に検証した研究がある。ひれの配置は流体力学的に重要な意味をもつようで、実験的に貝を水中で落下させると、高い着地成功 (開口部が下向き) 率をもたらすほか、それが失敗であっても体勢立て直しコストが低い方向に開口部が向くようになっているらしい (Palmer 1977; Carefoot & Donovan 1995)。また、シンプルに防御機能もある (Donovan et al. 1999)。このように、ヒレガイ属の貝殻は造形美と機能美を兼ね備えている。
