I became a patient mentor in 2018, sharing my experiences with University of Alberta medical students over the first two years of their program. The students inspire me to express my thoughts about chronic illness in art. At the 2020 PIE Interpretive Arts Exhibition I was honoured to be able to present the piece I had created.
In 2021 they decided to continue the tradition of featuring a mentor's art; I am so glad that I could play a part in inspiring a new tradition for the PIE Interpretive Project Exhibition.
I continue to take on more student mentees every year, and I love being a mentor, it gives me such hope for the future of the medical community. I wish every University and medical school had a PIE program.
The global pandemic has forced my visits with the students to become an online event. For her PIE project, one of my mentors asked me to send her a video of my thoughts about the past year and how covid-19 has affected me. The finished project can be seen here.
