[ THE SCRIPT WRITING PROCESS BEGAN WITH A ROUGH OUTLINE OF THE STORY BEATS ]
There were four iterations of the script throughout production. During the Christmas break, we rewrote the ending scene, as it didn't feel quite right.
[ RESEARCH ]
Writing the script somehow led to reading the wikipedia page for electromagnetic pulses (this will make sense if you watch the film)
I wanted to make sure that the characters seemed like they knew what they were talking about when it came to "sciency stuff"...despite this, we did cut a lot of corners with accuracy. Suspension of disbelief, okay?!
[ FUN FACT ! ]
The story and characters changed a lot from the original idea. Originally, Charlie's character was a lot more meek. I began writing the script super early on to ensure that we'd be able to start boarding ASAP, which meant that one of the first versions I wrote had an entirely different Charlie.
Tooby was also a lot meaner in the original version. One of the issues with this was that a meeker Charlie and a meaner Tooby felt too serious.
Charlie and Tooby as characters needed to feel as if they existed as two people with equal amounts of intensity — present in different ways.
Nailing down their personalities and backstories early on really helped with finding each character's "voice".
Tooby just talks and talks and talks, while Charlie is direct and assertive. She will get straight to the point, while Tooby will say a bunch of nonsense with an extreme amount of flair.
