The currency I suggest to help us mend the earth machine is the one of mortality: The acceptance of the simple, undeniable truth that our time here is limited.

Time Ship Earth - Operation: Freeflow Liquidation -ERROR-

Reading the “Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth” makes it clearer that our time here is ending. The world-machine runs hot, the system is losing its necessary rhythm, but changing the money lubricant will not help. Money is sticky and dirty, yet easily leaks through surfaces that seem sealed and impervious. After being inflationally used and changing so many hands it has penetrated all body parts, affecting the vital organs and destroying all chances of recovery.

The damage is done. The world can no longer support the needs of our greedy species. But how long will the systems keep on running? no one can say for sure. Our end is certain, only its date is unknown.

In an uncharted future many years from now, long after our end, entities resembling us in many ways found themselves confronted with similar dilemmas to ours. They too exploit their resources beyond their needs. Ignorance and arrogance threaten to terminate their existence.

They live in a world haunted by our absence. The more they destroy their habitat, the more they are exposed to the remains of ours. And the more they discover, the more fascinated they are. Our culture, our civilization, our technology, our infinite power and resources. They look up to us. For them, we are superior in any possible way.

In their time of trouble, they put their hopes on a revolutionary solution. They decided to send a capsule back in time to meet their predecessors of the golden era.

They come to us seeking answers. The immense, powerful creatures we are. Builders of machines and planners of cities. A god-like race who could end worlds with the push of a button. A species that has ceased to exist long before they came to life.

The time-capsule

Environmental changes affect life on earth. Our successors are much smaller than us and the time-capsule is built accordingly.

The power driving this marvelous machine is called nostalgia.

A mysterious substance that can only be found at the seam between memory and fantasy.

The time-pilots

Driven by desperation, admiration, arrogance, greed or just plain curiosity, the time-capsule pilots have sacrificed everything in order to meet us.

Can we help them on their mission?

Is there, perhaps, something we could learn from them?

Capi(mor)tal

Things fall apart. This insight could help us make the most with the time given.

Knowing that our existence will end and that there is in fact no future to look forward to, eliminates the significance of any achievement that could be accumulated as also any criteria of either failure or success. The only certainty left is the one of the final destination. And whether wished for or not, it will eventually arrive.

All is ending?

Yes, all is ending! eventually. And as soon as we begin to accept it - the better!

We can talk about oil changing and money, but the truth to be told is we are scared. This is not just a puzzle that needs to be solved, this is an existential horror that plagues all of us.

Anxiety is constantly looming over us. Yet instead of discussing it in a matter-of-fact manner, we increasingly escape to distractions such as mobile phones and casual entertainment. Things that society prescribes to us as "appropriate adult expectations" such as accumulating money and possessions and presenting a facade of "everything is fine".

We should honestly and thoroughly focus our mind on why and how we got to this point, before we put our hopes on alternatives.

The little people

My philosophy is: the bigger the issue is, the smaller you need to handle it. Truth to be told, in face of the deep and acute crisis we have found ourselves in, we are insignificant. The fragility of the figures at hand reflects pretty much on our own.

My wish for us, and for our successors, is to come to terms with our nature. To forgive ourselves for our imperfections. To bring empathy back to the center of discussion.

Deceleration

The news of our coming end will be followed by extreme reactions. Shock and fear can cause frenzy and desperate behaviour.

Like drowning men, we will grasp anything in reach of our hands, try living life to the fullest. Eat and drink beyond capacity, celebrate and party beyond enjoyment.

But then again, is that not what we already do? Could we, perhaps, be somewhat aware of our condition?

But there is a difference between awareness and acceptance. And once we grasp the situation to its fullness, we will learn that gaining more (experiences, possession etc.) does not fill the hole inside us. Then, slowly but surely, we will begin to reduce our rhythm.

Deceleration may be accompanied with hopelessness and melancholy. It should, as we are grieving - mourning our untimely death.

Mourning, one begins to remember. Sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches. Experiences and feelings. Events we spent years trying to forget, situations that kept us angry and ashamed, they are now hidden doors to times of happiness and naivety and we do all in our power to hold on to them.

Fragility

And in this time of despair, as pressure builds up behind the eyes, we suddenly feel a strong urge to be around others. loved ones, family, friends, anyone. Because as strong as we wish to be, it is weakness that brings us together.

And gazing towards the nothing awaiting, tears fill our eyesockets, we feel, for the first in long, air flowing through our body. Sounds around feel somehow less vague and colours seem brighter.

This is the currency of mortality -the understanding that things were here before us and things will be here long after we’re gone- that makes this moment exceptional.
