KATONTI CONTEMPORARY is a small portable art space consisting of two exhibition levels, which can be folded into a medium size suitcase.
Following the Bauhaus principles, the gallery structure is designed in a simple, cubicle form and reveals the bare materials it is made of. Maximising the usage of natural light, it allows a clear view of the pieces exhibited from various observation angles.
In it I present works of my own, works by other artists as well as everyday objects which caught my eye and provoked my senses.
The word 'katonti` means ‘I’ve become smaller’. It suggests humbleness and acceptance of one's limitations. The Katonti art space offers refuge from the overwhelming art world - with its trends and intrigues, and from the digital, commercial and industrial direction it has taken.
However, the shelter KC wishes to provide does not exist in a vacuum. By offering it, it reflects on the very phenomenon it wishes to escape. Knowing your limitation is not altogether a weakness. KC holds space for fragility, for emotions and thoughts we may wish to conceal in our daily lives, but are in fact the essence of our humanity.
Its small dimensions and mobility allows the KATONTI gallery to arrive in surprising places, to open up in front of different audience and challenge the observers with humanity and tenderness, as it offers the comfort of small things.
About me
My name is Dan Peled. I am a visual artist and focus mainly on figurative sculpting.
My work examines the boundaries between the personal and the social. I observe and reflect upon how social and political elements penetrate my private sphere and affect me as an individual.
In recent years, I began downsizing my work and creating miniature sculptures. This enables me to work faster and react with immediacy to life and world events. My work-area is now the small space between my hands, my thoughts and feelings are thus shifted to a protected zone, sheltered from the world. Between my palms - a sanctuary.
