For this project I examined social and it's impact both on society but also with me.
After taking the quiz, I was told that I was Fairly Reliant on social media. This doesn't come as a surprise to me as I get headaches now and then from 'doom scrolling'. It's easy to open up Instagram or Reddit and think 'I'll just look for a few minutes' until those few minutes turn into an hour. I've wanted to cut back before, and I did a little bit after I deleted TikTok (sadly I just used Insta reels as a replacement). I know I should try and spend less time on my phone I just struggle with figuring out where to start.
The social media statistic I used shows the most popular platforms online. I'm actual surprised that Facebook still remains high up on the list despite people continuing to go to other sites like TikTok. It relates to me because I do use YouTube significantly though I didn't consider to be a social media as I only watch videos on it instead of uploading it myself. It's become more like a streaming service nowadays.
I believe that Social Media's impact on society is a mixed one. I can't say it's totally bad or good given how diverse and big it's become. One on hand Social Media allows for people to connect with others around the world which opens people up to different opinions and views. It also can help garner awarness and support for issues that otherwise wouldn't be found in news articles. On the other hand it can lead to people being bullied and doxed. Misinformation is also easily distrubited through social media which can cause the truth in real life to be blurred. I don't think we should get rid of social media but we do need to consider working on media literarcy skills.
I learned that my social media use really needs to be worked on as I didn't score well on the quiz. It also made me reflect on how using social media has effected my mood, I've not really stopped to think if it had an emotional impact on me.
