Hello! I am Katherine Beyer, and I am currently studying Art Education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Through my field experience thus far, I have strived to create an inclusive, equal, calm, and safe classroom environment for every student. I believe a crucial aspect of an art classroom is acknowledging, appreciating, and accepting the diversities and differences between each individual. My goal as I gain more field experience is to continue creating a space where every student is accounted for, and I plan to carry this into my professional career and my own future classroom.
My artwork and life are like a junk drawer. Using a wide variety of media, I create works that reflect both major and minor past experiences that have largely impacted my perceptions of myself, my life, and those around me. As I declutter my metaphorical and physical junk drawer, I pick out bits and pieces that are scattered throughout and piece them together. I gravitate toward creating mixed media collages repurposing recycled and saved materials along the way. I discuss the intimate and personal relationships I have with myself and others. My artwork helps me return to previous moments in my life and work through unresolved emotions. When doing so, I focus on how I might have felt in the moment of a specific event and how I feel in my current state. After creating a response to my emotions, I often feel lighter and my junk drawer continues to become less cluttered.
