Kate has spent time in all 3 parts of the Suzuki triangle: Student, Parent & Teacher. Below she shares some of her best tips for each role.
Student
Practice every day!
Allow your parent to be your at-home practice coach.
Work hard and have fun!
Celebrate your progress.
Help your parent with new ideas for how to keep practice fresh and fun.
Parent
Make practicing a priority in your household. Treat it with the same diligence that you would having your child brush teeth, eat vegetables, or treat others kindly. It is the parent's responsibility to schedule and facilitate daily practice.
Play the CD every day when you wake up.
Tell your child how much you love practicing with him/her. Make it a time of connection rather than a task to be done.
Find out what motivates your child and create practice that utilizes these factors (for some children it's coloring in a chart for a repetition; for others, it's role-playing, etc.)
Teacher
Teach in bite-size, manageable chunks
Connect with each child and each parent and get to know them personally
Praise the effort and work to correct one item at a time.
Incorporate activities that will appeal to all learning styles.
Maintain a high level of standards in a kind, positive demeanor.
