For this project, I chose to research the development of autonomous vehicles, or AVs, primarily being worked on by Tesla, Nvidia, and Google's Waymo. I chose this emerging technology because I have a strong fear of driving and especially of self-driving cars. I hoped that this research would quell these fears, but it honestly just strengthened my opinion.
I learned that there is a extreme lack of policies in regards to ethics and how lawsuits and injuries would be handles by these companies. Tesla especially seems to be pushing towards getting the vehicles onto the market as fast as possible, while Nvidia challenges to take their time and focus on safety and clean energy.
I believe that they should ONLY pursue this technology if they can keep their scientific data public and pursue the cleanest solution to the mass consumption of fossil fuels.
I think this car is hilarious. All of the AVs I've seen look exactly like a cube toaster. There's GOT to be a reason for them to all look so ugly.
Throughout this Unit and the last, we have learned the best ways to use Office products, such as Word and PowerPoint, to efficiently convey information and use appropriate formatting.
By researching an up-and-coming technology, we also strengthen our abilities to find and use digital sources and keep up to date.
For this project, both me and a partner, Megan Carter, had to research separate countries and create Word documents detailing what we learned. After sharing them with each other, we then combined all of this data into a PowerPoint. In this PowerPoint we compare and contrast our countries as well as use technological skills provided to us from the previous units. In addition, we looked at the digital divide of both countries, analyzing how each is working to bridge the gap.
I chose to research Lithuania due to its beautiful scenery, and Megan chose to research New Zealand.
I learned that Lithuania is made up of many different cultures and languages, and that it swapped hands between other governing countries for many centuries.
New Zealand was once a British colony, being taken over in the 1840's from the indigenous Maori population. It remains a Commonwealth realm to this day.
Throughout this project, I learned the important of keeping your research clear and your citations all in one place. Trying to create both a Word document and a PowerPoint while switching between houses and devices was pretty rough. Overall, I'm not very proud of how the PowerPoint turned out, but I am proud that I got everything done within the short time frame.
I learned all about Lithuania, including that I would likely not live there due to the lack of English speaking citizens, however the weather sounds perfect and all pictures I've seen have been beautiful.
