One of the most common types of media used online, images allow us to visually portray statistics as well as provide context to text alongside it.
Social media takes advantage of humanity's preference for visual media and pattern recognition, allowing for algorithms to choose what we do or do not see online.
The most popular apps for image sharing include Instagram, Facebook, message sharing apps such as IM, and Snapchat.
What used to take multiple minutes and a ton of precision on large clunky cameras can now be done in the blink of an eye on just about any electronic device. All phones and most other devices come with a camera already built-in.

Animation, although not often thought of as an important type of media, keeps a large portion of the movie industry alive and allows for people to use animated pictures (GIFs) to express what they normally can't with written language or still images.
Despite the fact that the majority of GIFs are technically copyrighted from their original media, they are generally tolerated for personal non-commercial use without the looming threat of copyright infringement.
This GIF was found on GIPHY, a database of these animated images for people to use non-commercially.

Video is the now the most dominantly used type of media across all platforms, allowing for the use of all other multimedias within the video. Text, images, audio, and animated aspects all combine to keep the interest of it's viewers.
Platforms such as YouTube, Nebula, and Netflix take advantage of longform content, appealing to wide audience and grabbing attention using catchy thumbnails (images) and titles.
Shortform video content, however, has been growing exponentially with the creation of YouTube reels, Instagram reels, TikTok, and even Facebook reels. The emergence of "reels" as a media type is relatively new since the rise of TikTok, although the impacts on attention span and focus has been widespread, especially among youth.
I think its kind of a miracle that audio is able to be replicated with technology. The music industry has grown exponentially as music streaming sites started becoming more common. Spotify particularly has been in the lead of the most popular music streaming sites, although certain artists and users have been migrating recently due to the company not paying artists reasonably for their work.
YouTube, Apple Music, and SoundCloud are among the top competing with Spotify.
Audio recording has come a long way- from recording entire sets to digitally creating the entire song without the use of physical instruments.

During this project we learned the importance of using a multitude of types of medias to get our points across efficiently. We are able to understand how content is created, licensed, and distributed, as well as the ability to create our own.
