Product Designing and Development is a course which is taught in the third year at Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, India, to third year mechanical engineering students. The idea behind this course is to give the students an opportunity to conduct needs based studies while developing or introducing a product to the market. It involves a team of two doing extensive market research by doing needs identification and piloting concepts of their own product in order to hone on to the most promising and viable product.
A part of this course is to develop an actual product that can solve customer needs and demands. We over a course of three weeks come out with 15 innovative ideas of which a few are short listed and then we are given a choice to select and move forward with one. We decided to move forward with our key-chain hanger.
A key chain hanger is an everyday object which is found in most households, and after our market research, in most hotel-valet, and hospitals. The idea was to make a key-chain hanger that will index keys in an efficient manner to speed up searching of keys.
The following three concepts were short-listed. Out of the three, concept 2 got the highest points and, thus we made a prototype of it.
We had, as I recall, not more than 2 days to come up with this. As the final design was only finalized a week before the finals. Given that we had very little time, we came up with this extremely clumsy woodwork. Here are some of the pictures of the same.
