Job Shadow/Ethics interview
The professional that I interviewed was Lenny Weston, an Adult Protective Service Worker of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). I interviewed Lenny on March 22, 2019 at his office located at 57150 County Road 681, Hartford, Michigan. The purpose of my interview was to get a better understanding of how his position impacts the community, how he makes ethical decisions, and how his organization correlates to the content areas in family life education. I chose to job shadow Lenny because I am interested in working at MDHHS in the future. Many departments would be involved in the content areas of family life education. The Adult Protective Services (APS) department shares the mission of family life education in that it assists individuals and families in effective developmental transitions (National Council on Family Relations, 2009). Lenny has worked as an APS worker for ten years. He has gained valuable experience working with families and making tough decisions (L. Weston, personal communication, March 22, 2019). Ethical thinking and practices are combined into three different theoretical traditions. They include principles ethics, rational ethics, and virtue ethics. It is essential to use these methods to process and discuss ethical dilemmas. The code of ethics approach is the most favored among professionals that monitor ethical behavior and decision making. Code of ethics is essential for any organization to have as a guide to follow for professional conduct and values (Palm. 2009). The interview with Lenny provided an opportunity to job shadow him at his office and on a client home visit. In addition to professional ethics, the family life education content areas that relate will be discussed as well (National Council on Family Relations, 2011).
