Job Shadow: Lenny Weston, Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services Date: 03/22/2019 Total Hours: 2
The professional that I interviewed was Lenny Weston, an Adult Protective Service Worker. The purpose of my interview was to get a better understanding of how his position impacts the community, how he makes ethical decisions, and how his organization correlates to the content areas in family life education. I chose to job shadow Lenny because I am interested in working at MDHHS in the future. Many departments would be involved in the content areas of family life education. The Adult Protective Services (APS) department shares the mission of family life education in that it assists individuals and families in effective developmental transitions.
I believe the content area that is primarily involved would be Interpersonal Relationships. Lenny makes many relationships with hundreds of clients. He wouldn’t be able to help any of them if he didn’t take the time to develop and implement effective communication with problem-solving and conflict management strategies.
It was very rewarding to see the enjoyment Lenny has in helping needy families. He emailed and called clients to check on them and even had a client come visit him and he dropped everything to give them a few minutes of his day.
#6. Family Resource Management -An understanding of the decisions individuals and families make about developing and allocating resources including time, money, material assets, energy, friends, neighbors, and space, to meet their goals.
Description will be available once skill is completed.
#7. Parent Education and Guidance - An understanding of how parents teach, guide and influence children and adolescents as well as the changing nature, dynamics and needs of the parent/child relationship across the lifespan.
Description will be available once skill is completed.
#8. Family Law and Public Policy - An understanding of legal issues, policies, and laws influencing the well-being of families.
Description will be available once skill is completed.
#9. Professional Ethics and Practice - An understanding of the character and quality of human social conduct, and the ability to critically examine ethical questions and issues as they relate to professional practice
Lenny has worked as an Adult Protective Service worker for ten years. He has gained valuable experience working with families and making tough decisions (L. Weston, personal communication, March 22, 2019). I asked Lenny how he decides what to do in stressful work situations. His answer was that it could be difficult, but he has an online employee handbook that he can review, and that he meets with his supervisor and co-workers to discuss any ethical issues that arise. His team applies the National Association of Social Workers.
The ethics interview was placed under Professional Ethics and Practice because I learned how Lenny decides what to do in a ethics dilemma and how he collaborates with his co-workers to find solutions.
#10. Family Life Education Methodology - An understanding of the general philosophy and broad principles of family life education in conjunction with the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate such educational programs.
Assignment: Family Life Education Paper Date: 04/22/2019
Family Life Education help families reach their full potential by educating, preventing, and strengthening the family unit. Family Life Education is a growing profession, with a rich history that has helped to contribute to where the profession is today. There are many that do not know what family life education is. It is vital that the community becomes aware the importance of Family Life Education and the value the profession is to society.
I placed this assignment under family life education methodology, because after completing this assignment it helped me to understand principles of family life education.
