Here are brief synopses of my current research projects. Students interested in being a part of my research team should contact me. I accept students through two paid research opportunities on campus, the CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP) and the Guttman Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program. Students should apply to CRSP in September. First Year students only may apply to LSAMP in December of their first year.

PI: Dr. Karla FullerAwarded January 2020Generating loss-of-function deletion mutants in zebrafish using CRISPR/Cas9
The project goal is to gain new insights on the use of CRISPR/Cas9 to generate cell cycle inhibitor mutations in zebrafish development by creating a novel approach to studying mutations in the CIP/KIP family of cell cycle inhibitor proteins (p21, p27 and p57). These standardized protocols can also be used to create Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) for community college students at my institution.
National Science Foundation Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic Serving Institutions (NSF I-USE:HSI) Grant
PI: Niesha ZiehmkeCo-PI: Dr. Karla Fuller, Dr. Dalvin HillAwarded June 2020Testing the Impact of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Streamline Transfer Support on STEM Success for Underrepresented Students
This project seeks to improve success in undergraduate science and information technology courses by implementing culturally responsive curricula and undergraduate research in the classroom. A parallel facet of the program seeks to increase post-transfer retention and completion through improved advising and partnerships at four-year campuses.
