Melvin R. Daniels Bridge Redesign
The Daniels Bridge is a part of Highway 64 and connects Roanoke Island to the Barrier Islands in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Being a 5-lane highway, both crossing the road and walking or biking alongside the traffic is very dangerous, and so many pedestrians have gotten hit that pedestrian access was shut off on one side to stop people from crossing the road. This limits accessibility and accomodation for forms of transportation other than cars, as well as fishing, which the bridge has traditionally been used for.
My redesign of the bridge includes multi-use paths for biking and walking, a bus stop for bus service along the road, and a siganlized crosswalk with a button pedestrians can use to safely cross the road. Moreover, the redesign takes up the same amount of space as the original road, without deviating from lane width standards.
The final project was presented as a 1:35 scale miniature model, along with photographs showcasing it. The design was publicly presented at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC, and East Carolina University's Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese, NC.
