I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Industrial Systems Biotechnology group at the Institute of Applied Microbiology (iAMB) at the RWTH Aachen University (Aachen, Germany). My academic journey spans cutting-edge fields such as bioenergy, biochemical engineering, and computational biology. I am deeply passionate about sustainability and leveraging science to address global challenges.
Through my research, I aim to drive innovation in renewable energy and sustainable bioprocessing. My work with the HYDROCOW project, funded by the European Innovation Council, focuses on developing engineered hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (eHOB) to produce food-grade proteins, pushing the boundaries of bioengineering and environmental sustainability.
Before postdoc, I was Prime Minister's Research Fellow (India's most prestigious fellowship for graduate students) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati (Assam, India). Where I worked on my doctoral thesis entitled "Investigations in Enhanced Production of Bio-alcohols and their Derivatives using Experimental and In-Silico Approach"
Feel free to explore my page to learn more about my research, publications, and ongoing and previous projects.
Warm regards
Dr. Karan Kumar
I have 7+ years of research experience in microbial biotechnology and systems biology, integrating wet‑lab fermentation with computational modeling to engineer microbes for sustainable food, energy, and bioprocess innovations.
My toolkit spans bench and bioreactor fermentation with DoE‑driven optimization; pangenome/ comparative genomics and genome annotation; genome‑scale metabolic modeling (GEMs; FBA/FVA) with transcriptome integration; RNA‑seq pipelines; enzyme kinetics; and analytical methods (GC/LC, spectroscopy, microscopy). I work daily in Python/R on HPC/Linux, use Git, and apply ML for DBTL‑guided strain design.
Trained as a PMRF PhD (IIT Guwahati), I am now a Postdoctoral Researcher at RWTH Aachen on the EIC‑funded HYDROCOW project, developing pangenome‑informed models and AI‑assisted strategies to produce microbial proteins from CO₂ and H₂.
