St. Andrew Lotome Secondary School ICT Club from Napak District, Karamoja region.
Our project is titled:
“Providing Quality Education Among the Nomadic Pastoralists of Karamoja.”
Why we chose this project:
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, the literacy rate in Karamoja is below 30%, compared to the national average of about 76%. Many children here spend their days moving with cattle rather than attending school. UNICEF reports that over 50% of school-age children in Karamoja have never attended formal education, and those who start often drop out due to migration, hunger, or lack of resources.
The effects are clear:
On Youth: They miss out on literacy, numeracy, and modern skills, making it harder to break the cycle of poverty.
On Parents: Many wish for their children to learn but have no way to maintain education during migration.
On the Community: The low literacy levels limit development and keep the region behind in economic participation and decision-making.
Our solution:
We decided to use ICT to make education mobile, flexible, and culturally relevant so that no child is left behind — even while moving with cattle.
Our innovation includes two key components:
A Blogger Website – “Karamoja Moving classroom”
Hosts free lessons in literacy, numeracy, and life skills.
Content is aligned with the Ugandan curriculum but simplified for self-paced learning.
Includes digital storytelling videos in Ng’akarimojong and English, making lessons relatable to pastoralist life.
Expected impact:
Reach over 200 children in nomadic communities within the first 6 weeks.
Improve literacy and numeracy scores in our school by at least 20% in one year.
Inspire other schools in Karamoja to adopt this flexible learning model.
