Chinese Global Critical Mineral Investment Dataset [Coming soon!] 

Description:  Drawing on press releases and periodic reports from 695 Chinese companies, along with publicly available media sources, I map the global footprint of Chinese mining firms in the critical mineral extraction sector. Each record in the dataset includes information on the type of mineral extracted, estimates of resources and reserves, geographic coordinates, the year the project came under Chinese ownership and began operation, the ownership share held by Chinese firms, and is supported by at least two data sources. This dataset helps address existing gaps in data on Chinese critical mining projects.

Chinese Foreign Direct Investment in Global Solar and Wind Industries (CGIRE) (with Yuk-Shing Cheng, Man-lok Kwok, and Jiaqi Pan)

Description:  Chinese companies have experienced rapid advancements in solar and wind energy technologies and have emerged as significant investors in the global solar and wind energy sectors. The China's Global Investment in Renewable Energy database (CGIRE) offers a comprehensive overview of the development of overseas investment activities undertaken by Chinese companies through the incorporation of innovative data collection and validation methods.  Our database covers 1,110 investment projects across 63 countries, undertaken by 76 Chinese companies between 2006 and 2022. These Chinese investments include 896 power generation projects and 98 manufacturing facilities, yielding a combined installed capacity of 55.9 GW and a production capacity of 94.3 GW respectively. Notably, 72% of power generation projects are pinpointed with exact geographical coordinates. Additionally, the database furnishes detailed information on the investment and divestment characteristics, if applicable, for each overseas investment activity, aiming to elucidate the dynamics of investment decisions. This resulting database can offer regularly updated and comprehensive information on the global footprint of Chinese investments in the solar and wind energy sectors.
