Visual Steering & Production
After the blockout and concept phase it was timt to move on to production. The interactable objects I modeled myself, and the day and night switch aswell as the pushable stones are fully functional in game. A cell shader was used to create a cohesive style and to make the shadows on objects hard and extra clear.
Walkthrough
The game starts with the title screen and on the right side of the screen a smoking car that has tumbled off the road is visible.
The camera moves towards the player and the first thing they see is a gate, drawing the players attention to it and wat lies beyond it.
The player encounters the first puzzle.
A yellow seethrough wall blockes the way and is held in place by the lantern, which is connected to a stone with a sun seal, flickering with light, half covered in shadow.
The stone on the right side can be moved (the rope signifying that it might be interactible) to fully cover the sun mark in shadow and deactivate it.
The player now learnes to switch between day and night at the small shrines to make objects visible wherever the moon signs are placed.
They also encounter a drawing on the stone wall of the two deieties, Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi, the Kami of sun and moon.
Here the player enters an open space where the main goal of the game is visible.
The main puzzle is located here and consists of three parts, communicated by the three glowing lanterns at the sealed gate.
The first part of the puzzle requires the player to use the learned mechanics.
Same with the second puzzle, only a bit more complicating.
The third puzzle again uses the day and night mechanic with an extra step added.
And here the second drawing can be seen, symbolizing that the souls of the deceased move on through the Tori gate into the sun goddeses protection.
This time the player does not get a stone to use for shadow, they need to use their own shadow to cover the sun mark, which is currently clearly visible on the ground.
As a reward for clearing the puzzles the gate opens and the character gets to move on to the afterlife
