Laboratory Development & Educational Innovation
Faculty-in-Charge, Communication Engineering Laboratory (C217) | July 2023–Present
Driven by a strong motivation to modernize communication systems education, I have led the complete transformation of C217 from a conventional hardware-centric laboratory into a flexible, software-driven experimental environment. The redesigned framework places Digital Signal Processing (DSP), Software-Defined Radios (SDRs), FPGA platforms, and emerging 5G / 6G technologies at the core of hands-on learning and experimentation.
The key initiatives completed and currently underway are as follows:
Modernization of the Communication Engineering Laboratory
Transitioned from conventional hardware-based experiments towards a flexible, software-defined experimental framework integrating DSP, SDR, and programmable hardware platforms.
Development of SDR-based Communication Experiments
Developed hands-on experiments using available Software-Defined Radio (SDR) equipment for digital communications, signal processing, wireless systems, and software-defined wireless prototyping.
5G/6G Wireless Testbed Development
Initiated the development of a next-generation wireless communication testbed, with the proposed infrastructure currently under procurement, to support 5G experimentation, wireless prototyping, and future research towards 6G technologies.
Expansion of Computer Communication & Networking Laboratory
Expanding practical networking experiments and exploring their integration with SDR-based wireless platforms and the proposed 5G/6G Testbed.
Development of FPGA-based Communication Systems Laboratory
Initiated integration of FPGA platforms into laboratory teaching and experimentation to facilitate hardware implementation of communication algorithms, real-time signal processing, and digital communication subsystems.
Enhancement of Optical Communication Laboratory Experiments
Initiated improvements to laboratory experiments in optical communications, covering both fiber-optic and free-space optical (FSO) communication systems, with an emphasis on practical demonstrations, system characterization, and performance evaluation.
Towards a Multidisciplinary Communication Systems Laboratory for R&D Activities
Aligning laboratory infrastructure and experimental activities with emerging communication technologies to support student projects, postgraduate research, practical training, and collaborative research initiatives.
