Compare this to how he just put Superman a Kryptonite necklace and threw him into a pool in the original Donner film. Part of his hatred towards Superman is that he feels like people see Superman like a god and that they would have seen him like that if Superman had never appeared to the point of praying for him, showcasing much more his god complex. He also hates Superman for costing him five years of his life, but he neglects the fact that he deserved to lose those five years for his inhumane actions.
