We invite rising high school seniors (current high school juniors) of Marathi Kala Mandal of Greater Washington DC member families to apply for the 2025 Savkar-Loser KALA Award ($1,000).
About the Award
The Savkar-Loser KALA Award ($1000) is for a rising high school senior (currently a high school junior) in a Marathi Kala Mandal Greater Washington DC member family who best exemplifies the four KALA elements of Karuna, Arts, Leadership, and Academics. The purpose of the award is to recognize and honor rising high school seniors for making a positive difference in the MKM community and beyond. These well-rounded, motivated, dedicated, and conscientious leaders will help make a better world for coming generations.
Application forms will be available to download from this site beginning May 15, 2025. Completed Application forms and other required documents must be submitted by email to KalaAwardTeam@gmail.com between May 15 and June 30, 2025.
Eligibility
Applicants for the award must be current high juniors, with a grade point average of 3.75 or higher, who will be high school seniors in the 2025 Fall Semester. The applicants, or their families, must be paid-up 2025 members of the Marathi Kala Mandal - Greater Washington, DC (MKM).
Important Notes
• The KALA Award application process is independently managed. The selection process is not governed by Marathi Kala Mandal.
• This award is only available to active 2025 MKM members’ children.

Award Sponsors
The Savkar-Loser KALA award is established by Professors Emeriti Reva A Savkar and Robert C Loser. They have been colleagues, pioneers in online teaching-learning, fellow innovators, passionate educators, best friends, and since 2014, spouses. They share a commitment to Education, Service, Social Justice, and Equity, and have served a combined seven decades as professors at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), helping to bring joy of learning to tens of thousands of students and faculty across the US. They have received Regional, State and National awards for their contributions to Education, Critical Thinking Skills, Science, and Teaching Excellence. Professor Reva A Savkar received the 2013 Statewide Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and in 2015 she was the invited speaker at President Obama’s White House National Educator Appreciation Day Ceremony.
Mrs. Reva A Savkar is a founding member of MKM, who has served on the MKM Board of Directors in 1977 and 2004. Mr. Robert C Loser is a former Peace Corps Volunteer, who taught Math and Science to high school students for four years in a village near Janakpur, Nepal. He is an an MKM member by marriage and by choice.
