Physical Dysfunction Fieldwork I is a one hour/week lecture and thirty hour clinical site experience. Lecture prepares for the off-site experience and future fieldwork IIs by requiring academic & practical competency-based assignments. The externship will be arranged and take place at clinical facility sites within the community under the direction of an academic fieldwork coordinator. Emphasis is to expose students to a variety of diagnoses and to develop professional behaviors and clinical observation skills. This is a designated service-learning course.
During my Level 1 OTA fieldwork experience, I made connections to learning, personal growth, and clinical significance by applying theoretical knowledge to real-world settings, reinforcing the importance of adapting interventions to individual client needs. I gained confidence in my ability to communicate effectively with clients, building rapport and trust, which helped me grow personally by developing empathy and patience. Clinically, I learned the value of collaboration within a multidisciplinary team, recognizing how each professional contributes to the holistic care of the client. This experience has solidified my understanding of occupational therapy principles and their direct impact on improving clients' quality of life
