これまで英語の「男性性」が音声的側面（語末の子音連続、単音節語、脚韻部）や文法的側面（屈折の単純性、省略）に現れることを見てきた。本節では、「男性性」が表現上の慎ましさ（sobriety）にも現れることが示されている。言い換えれば、「男性性」は英語の語用的側面にも見て取れる訳である。
英語話者は承認や賞賛のための誇張的な表現を嫌い、 ‘that isn’t half bad’「案外いい」とか ‘she is rather good-looking’「彼女は結構美人だ」とかいった控え目な表現を選択する。ドイツ人が kolossal「巨大な」とか pyramidal「（ピラミッドのように）巨大な」と言うところを、イギリス人は great とか biggish とか言うのみだ。またフランス人が extrêmement「極度に」とか infiniment「無限に」とかいうところで、イギリス人は very とか rather とか pretty としか言わないのである。 ‘Quelle horreur!’「なんて恐ろしい」は ‘That’s rather a nuisance.’「かなり厄介だ」になってしまうし、同様に ‘Je suis ravi de vous voir’「お会いできて光栄です」も ‘Glad to see you’「会えてよかったです」になってしまう。
次の箇所だが、ここは Jespersen の英文が非常に流麗なのでそのまま引用する。英文解釈の観点からも楽しい。
An Englishman does not like to commit himself by being too enthusiastic or too distressed, and his language accordingly grows sober, too sober perhaps, and even barren when the object is to express emotions. There is in this trait a curious mixture of something praiseworthy, the desire to be strictly true without exaggerating anything or promising more than you can perform, and on the other hand of something blameworthy, the idea that it is affected, or childish and effeminate, to give vent to one’s feelings, and the fear of appearing ridiculous by showing strong emotions.
イギリス人は進んで情熱的になりすぎたり苦しみすぎたりするのを嫌っている。従って彼らの言語も慎ましく、おそらくは慎ましすぎるほどで、感情を表現しようとすると乏しくなりさえする。この特性には興味深い混じりあいが見られ、一方には何も誇張せず実践できること以上のものを約束しないで厳密に忠実であろうと望む賞賛に値すべき点があり、もう一方には感情を表すのは気取っていて子供じみて男らしくないと考え、強い感情をあらわにして馬鹿にされるのを恐れる非難されるべき点がある。
Jespersen はこうした特性が女性より男性に見られることから、英語の「男性性」を象徴するものと捉えている。
