The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This artifact is a lesson that was created during my time in student teaching on January 18, 2023. This lesson focuses on comparing and contrasting stories with a technique of modeling, guided practice, and individual/group practice. Comparing and contrasting is a priority standard for the given unit in the second grade classroom. So, it was produced in order to help the students be on the right path for once they reach their summative assessment which will include this topic, that they will complete individually.
This lesson is of great importance because in the beginning of the lesson I was able to use “student work samples… to plan and evaluate effective content area reading, writing, and oral communication instruction” (6K). I showed a couple of the student’s previous work with comparing and contrasting in order to show and determine the students understanding of the topic. I was then able to use this determination to see if there was any area of reteaching needed or if we were able to continue with the lesson. This artifact shows great progress towards meeting this standard because I was using the students' work examples to help enhance everyone's understanding on this topic and plan for what needed to be done to get everyone to where they need to be.
With this lesson, I was able to learn the importance of using the students' own work to see where they are and to determine what else needed to be done to help reach the academic standard. Rather than pulling examples from elsewhere, using the students actual work I was able to understand their individual understanding and strengthen the rest of the class’ understanding of the topic. This is extremely important to do in my future practice because the data of the students is the key component of knowing how they are performing and what their understanding is. I will continuously use students' work in order to help build the class to be stronger and knowledgeable.
This artifact is a lesson that was created during my time in student teaching on February 9, 2023. This lesson focuses on opinion writing with the technique of modeling, guided practice, and individual practice. Opinion writing is a priority standard for the given unit in the second grade classroom. So, this lesson was produced in order to help the students be on the right path for once they reach their summative assessment which will include this topic, that they will complete individually.
The importance of this artifact is that it walks the students through the process of opinion writing “using modeling, explanation, practice, and feedback to teach students to monitor and apply comprehension strategies independently, appropriate to the content learning;” (6N). I was able to model how the opinion writing should be done, work together on an opinion writing, and then have the students complete it on their own. This lesson meets this standard as it uses these strategies in order for the student to end up working on the task/standard independently.
This lesson was an amazing experience and allowed me to understand how important it is to walk students through the process of writing. Rather than just showing the students an example and then having them figure it out on their own, I was able to walk through step by step. I think that this is super important to my development as a teacher because each lesson I teach should model this type of strategy. Providing the tools for the students' success is one thing, but to explain these tools is what is necessary in reaching this ultimate success.
