The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
This artifact was a lesson that was created for the class MATH288: Elementary Math Methods on November 11, 2022. This lesson was centered on telling time and we were given the instructions to incorporate technology within the lesson. For this lesson, we were also given a case study to compose a lesson plan with the different attributes that students hold. In my case, I was able to use the classroom that I was completing my novice teaching in, so I did not use one of the given case studies.
This lesson is of great importance because the incorporation of technology is necessary to allow students to use different tools to reach the goal of meeting the academic standards. In this lesson I was able to “use(s) technology to accomplish differentiated instructional objectives that enhance learning for each student” (5N). By having the students use technology within the lesson they are able to use what they have learned during the direct instruction and enhance their learning with the use of their iPads. This lesson helps show the progress of meeting this standard by using a variety of ways of instruction in order for students to use different tools to meet the academic standards set out for them. Incorporating technology within lessons is necessary in helping students grow in all areas of their lives, so it is important to consistently bring in these tools to have students reach their full potential.
Through this lesson, I was able to understand the importance of incorporating technology into lessons. Incorporating technology is something that I am continuously working on to find the correct tools that will enhance the students' learning and not just distract them. Technology is something that is with us each and everyday, so it is important to embrace it, rather than push away from it because it is newer. In the process of this lesson, I was creating a better understanding that I should be improving my use of technology in my lessons as it will help build the students' success in this world. Technology is the future and so are the children that I teach, so it is important to embrace these together.
This artifact is a lesson that was created during my time in student teaching on January 25, 2023. This lesson focuses on the use of collective nouns with a technique of modeling, guided practice, and individual/group practice. Collective nouns include things like “swarm of bees” or “a loaf of bread”; these nouns are a priority standard for the given unit in the second grade classroom. So, it was produced in order to help the students be on the right path for once they reach their summative assessment which will include these nouns, that they will complete individually.
This lesson was not only important because it led them towards the summative assessment for the unit, but it also was of great importance because it “maximize(d) instructional time” (5R). As the students were working on collective nouns around the room at different tables, they were given a timer of 5 minutes to complete 6 different questions at their given table. If the students finished these 6 questions before the timer went off, they had another worksheet that they were able to work on while they were waiting for others to finish. This shows great progression towards meeting this standard because I was able to minimize the downtime for the students to become distracted and continuously have their brain focused on the topic of collective nouns.
In this lesson, I was able to understand the importance of maximizing my instructional time with the students. The students were constantly learning during this lesson, allowing for very limited time of distraction or having to redirect the students attention. Maximizing this time allows for more knowledge to be gained and for the students to continuously grow. This is something that I strive for as an educator in my current and future practice in order for the students to constantly reach their goals and focus on maximizing their time. The hours of a school day fly by, so it is important to make great use of every minute given.
