GIS is shorthand for Geographic Information Systems. It is the collection, organization, and visualization of datasets within a geospatial framework. We typically see GIS on interactive maps, such as Google Maps, where different kinds of information are organized in a way that helps us to understand not only where things are, but also why things are where they are.
My experience with GIS involves working close with the public sector to assess patterns that enables data-driven decisions for the organizations and agencies that I have worked with. Major geospatial analyses projects include heat maps of traffic crashes, analyses of traffic crashes to winter weather, the differences in COVID-19 cases between different areas of Illinois, and much more.
