Advocacy could be defined as an action in which an individual speaks up on someone else's behalf. In nursing, I will use advocacy to ensure that my patients are getting what they need and that they feel respected. Advocacy is crucial in the nurse-patient relationship to ensure that the patient is being treated fairly, and being given the best possible care.
Compassion goes hand-in-hand with care. It is about considering someone else's feelings, having empathy for them, and having the desire to help them. Compassion can take various forms, but as a nurse, I will make sure that my compassion will include respect, dignity politeness, and understanding, that way I can build trust and form a harmonious connection with my patients.
Cultural competence is about demonstrating cultural awareness, humility, and safeness. It is respecting the patient's values, beliefs, and preferences and empowering them as well as treating them with equity regardless of the nurse's own cultural upbringing.
Autonomy means having the free will to make informed personal choices. It is very important in nursing to respect the patient's autonomy, educate them on their choices, and clarify anything they do not understand. This empowers the patient to practice self-care and independence and builds rapport.
