Mackenize Health Reactivation Care Centre - Finch Site - Professional Practicum I
The patient population at Mackenzie Health RCC was a geriatric center holding most older adults for transfers to a long-term care center. Given that it is an RCC, there were not very complex health issues in patients however, I did see patients come in with fractures of the hip or femur, pressure ulcers, pneumonia, dementia, deep-vein thrombosis, and sometimes a few more delicate conditions. The overall population in my unit was over the age of 70.
Humber River Hospital - Wilson Site - Professional Practicum II
The patient population at Humber River was mixed. I was doing my practicum on the 8th floor, Respirology, where there was a mixed range of ages, some as young as 28. Since it was a respirology unit, I was dealing with patients with respiratory problems, some patients were stable and others were ICU patients. I got to learn about tracheal/oral suctioning, looking out for signs and symptoms of UTI and practicing my head-to-toe assessments with a primary focus on cardio and respiratory, however, given the comatose state of many patients, I also had to monitor skin integrity due to the high risk for pressure ulcers.
