Internships site: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

At LLS, my role is mainly on patient related information. Our mission is cure leukemia and lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life and patients and their families.

Primary Responsibilities:

Some of my primary responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating on First Connection Program to connect patients with a volunteer who has gone through a similar experience.

  • Conducting community outreach and education for patients.

  • Tracking patient interactions on Sales Force.

Learning Objectives:

Before starting my internship, there are a few things that I set as goals. Some of them being bringing my experience of skills and professionalism that I've gained at my previous job to help transition into leadership skills. Also, collaborate in diverse teams utilizing interpersonal skills, recognizing and demonstrating sensitivity to diverse points of views and build and manage relationships with peers, faculty, alumni and healthcare professionals.

I have met my objectives during my Capstone semester and during my internship. I was able to learn and progress my goals by attending weekly meetings, working on different projects and asking questions!

Personal Development:

Throughout my internship, I was able to improve my soft skills, such as communication, time management and networking. Since my internship was remote, I was able to grow my communication skills since we could not have conversations face-to-face. As my main responsibility was to listen and speak to patients, I was able to develop my problem solving skills. Working with my manager has helped me learn many things in the workplace and in life. I am excited to continue to learn more in the future.

Academic Connections:

Many of the courses that I have taken at IUPUI has helped me feel prepared and confident working in healthcare management. My previous coursework in Professionalism in Healthcare Workplace and Health Systems Administration has helped me prepare for my internship. I was able to apply what I learned in the classroom to hands on projects. I was thankful to have professors who cared for their students.
