Getting Started, Step by Step
Research Colleges: Start by researching colleges that you are interested in attending. Look into their admission requirements, programs offered, location, campus culture, and financial aid options. This will help you narrow down your list of potential colleges to apply to.
Create a Timeline: It's important to create a timeline for yourself to ensure that you don't miss any deadlines. Mark down the application deadlines, test dates, and other important dates on a calendar or planner.
3. Prepare for Standardized Tests: Many colleges require standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT. Determine which tests are required by the colleges you are interested in and begin studying for them (check out our PSAT/SAT page for more information). Consider taking a practice test to gauge your current level and identify areas you need to improve.
4. Gather Necessary Documents: Colleges require various documents. You will likely need your high school transcripts and letters of recommendation. Transcripts can be obtained from your school counselors. Start gathering these required documents early to ensure you have everything you need when it's time to apply.

5. Start Writing Your Personal Statement: The personal statement is an important part of the college application. It's an opportunity to showcase who you are and why you would be a good fit for the college. Start brainstorming ideas and writing drafts early so you have plenty of time to revise and edit.
6. Submit Your Application: Once you have completed all the necessary steps, submit your application before the deadline.
Don't hesitate to seek guidance from your high school counselor or a trusted teacher. They can provide valuable insight and help you navigate the application process.
