Community Partners: Several local business are creating badges for students
We are using the platform: OYOclass.com
We create a series of challenges, teachers (aides and assistants, nurses, and support staff) submit evidence, and a badge is given.
For example, there was a basic Google Sheets challenge that asked teachers to submit a Google sheet that uses a basic formula that is being used in the classroom. We attach a how-to use Google Sheets video to the instructions. Teachers submit evidence (a screenshot or a link) for review.
For our rollout we linked earned badges with actual paid time. We used too many snow days this year. Teachers could earn a certain number of stars (stars indicate how much time it takes to complete the challenge) and then did not have to come in on the makeup day during April Break. All but two staff members completed the requirement.
Lastly, we made sure the badges weren't about a specific content area and kept them broad so anyone in the platform felt it applied to them.
Next year we will rollout badges to students. We wanted teachers to be familiar with the platform so they could begin envisioning how they could create badges for students. Teachers will create badges to fit both content and grade levels. Additionally, the OYO Platform has its own coding badges in several coding languages and the OYO staff will check student evidence for coding badges. Coding in OYO will be part of K-4 computer lab and will be independent for grades 5-12.
